What does Google have to say about AI generated content?

Tips for avoiding problems with spammy, low quality website content

Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader both knew it: the path to the Dark Side might be quicker… easier… more tempting – but that way disaster lies. So before you rely solely on AI to generate your website content, stop! And hear what Google have to say about this cheaper, easier, but ultimately unsuccessful method.

Remember the Golden Rule: Google rewards high quality content

Google themselves have always maintained that their ranking systems aim to reward “original, high-quality content that demonstrates E-E-A-T”. That means Expertise, Experience, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. Not what you get from AI content!

What’s more, Google state that their guidance has been consistent for years: using automation (including AI) to generate content with the primary purpose of manipulating ranking in search results is a violation of their spam policies. Beware!

To quote Google, “If you see AI as an essential way to help you produce content that is helpful and original, it might be useful to consider. If you see AI as an inexpensive, easy way to game search engine rankings, then no!”

So does that mean AI has to get in the bin? Not necessarily…

How to use AI to help you create quality content

Not all automation, and that includes AI generation, is spam. You might like to use AI as a ‘launching pad’ to help you generate quality content. Just be sure that your finished product has a healthy dose of humanity to ensure it meets that high bar for original, high-quality, people-first content that demonstrates the E-E-A-T qualities.

Looking out for poor quality content is nothing new for Google – they tell us they’ve been tackling poor quality content for years. They have focused on creating systems to help determine whether your content is high quality or not – and the advent of AI will only make this focus stronger.
